Not even the Milanese rain could dampen the spirits and enthusiasm of POWER-GEN Europe, POWERGRID Europe and Renewable Energy World Europe attendees at the Fiera Milano City in Milan. Organized by PennWell Corporation the three shows over a three day period attracted a record attendance of over 12,500 visitors from the international power industry.

Exhibitors at POWER-GEN Europe were clearly pleased with this record attendance and expressed their enthusiasm for the show.

“POWER-GEN Europe is definitely the most important show for Ansaldo Energia, particularly as we are at home in Italy”, said Paola Tarditi, External Relations at Ansaldo Energia. “We have had a great and highly qualified attendance at the show and we trust that this will bring good returns for Ansaldo Energia.”

Seven innovators scoop industry awards at POWER-GEN Europe

10 June 2008 - Representatives from utilities, equipment manufacturers and turnkey plant companies were among the seven winners of the prestigious Best Paper Awards at POWER-GEN Europe in Milan last week. The awards were made on the final day of the three-day conference with a trophy being presented to the winner in each conference track, as judged by a special sub-committee of the Advisory Board for the conference.

Chairman of conference, PennWell's Nigel Blackaby, said that the winners represented, "the best of the best," from the conference. "We received many hundred abstracts each year and only a relative few are accepted for the conference. These winners are chosen from among the papers received and presented and deliver something new to delegates in a well researched and presented form." He added that the judges were looking for papers that advanced knowledge, were innovative and would help with the future development of the market.

The winner of Track 1, which looked at strategic developments across the European power market, was Gabor Bercsi from Budapest-based Sinergy Ltd., whose paper "Strategy for the new generation capacity in Hungary", was adjudged to have presented an important overview of a versatile and changing electricity system. Track 2, "Towards zero CO₂ and carbon capture and storage", was won by Bernd von der Heide from German boiler equipment supplier Mehldau & Steinfath Umwelttechnik. With his paper, "SNCR process - Best available technology for NO_x reduction in waste-to-energy plants."

Dr Stephano Sigali from Enel Ricerca emerged as the winner of the award for Track 3 (Gas fired power generation), for his paper, Low NO_x hydrogen fuelled GT features and environmental performances. Fossil and nuclear power generation was the theme for Track 4 and the Best Paper Award for this track went to Sara Ruiz from Tecnatom, based in Spain, whose paper "Future of biofuels: use of Cynara cardunculus biomass in fossil power plants'" caught the judges attention. Cardoon (Cynara cardunculus L.) is a Mediterranean perennial plant whose grain oil has similar composition to sunflower or saffron oils and can be easily extracted.

Gael de Bressy from Sergi Holding with a paper entitled, "An answer to prevent transformer explosion and fire: live test and simulations on large transformers," collected the award in Track 5. This track covered Electrical and I & C systems and the judges felt that the paper offered an important answer to safety problems that can occur in power plants.

Local power engineering giants Ansaldo Energia were the winners in Track 6, with Dr Enrico Pignoné collecting the glass trophy for his paper, "Monitoring and diagnostic of power plants: AEN experience. This paper demonstrated a diagnostic tool that could prevent plant failures and therefore bring about cost reductions.
